The name "Qassam" is significantly associated with the Palestinian armed resistance movement, Hamas. One of its most renowned martyr commanders, Yahya Ayyash, adopted the name Khalid Islambani Al-Qassam as a nom de guerre in honor of Izz Al-Din Al-Qassam, the founder of the military wing of the Islamic Brotherhood in 1935 in Palestine. Al-Qassam's guerrilla tactics against British rule in Palestine were instrumental in inspiring the modern Palestinian resistance movement and the name has since come to symbolize militant resistance in Palestine.
