Basra is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world, with a rich cultural history that stretches back over 4,000 years. It was a major trading center along the ancient Persian Gulf maritime trade routes and played a significant role in the development of Islamic civilization. Basra was the second capital of the Islamic Caliphate after Medina, and it was here that many important religious and intellectual figures lived, including the prominent scholar and jurist, Ibn Abi Dunya. Basra was also the birthplace of the Abbasid Caliphate, which ruled the Islamic world from 750 to 1258 CE and is known for its patronage of art, science, and scholarship.
